Rarotonga.htm

In March 2003, while cruising French Polynesia on the Tahitian Princess, we visited Rarotonga for just one day.  This was just enough time to fall in love with this island and her people.  We vowed to return as soon as possible to spend more time getting to know the people and further exploring the island.  We made it back in November 2003 for a ten day land vacation.  And are we glad we did!   Instead of staying at one of the many resorts, we decided to rent the Blue Lagoon Villa at Black Rock on the West side of the island.

Our infatuation with this little gem of an island has turned into a love affair.  The weather was perfect, the villa was exceptional, the food was spectacular and the people are amazing!  It truly is the best destination we have found for a land vacation.  It is not, however, your typical resort destination.  In fact there are none of the mega-resorts that can be found in French Polynesia.  It is really laid back and slow paced.  Activities are limited to water sports, fishing, and hiking.  There is limited shopping and few excursion tours.  The resorts offer local entertainment (island nights) and we heard from other visitors that the music and dancing was wonderful.  We just didn't feel like doing the tourist stuff this time around.  What was truly amazing, and a real surprise for us, was the quality of the restaurants on the island.   We sampled the best steak, the best lamb and the best seafood we have ever tasted in all of our travels.
